Barbara Joann Johnson

February 2, 1937 — June 15, 2026

On Monday, June 15, 2026, our world lost a cherished member of the family. Barbara Joann Johnson, took her last breath on earth and ran into the arms of those who were patiently waiting for her. Lovingly known by her family as Mama/Mother/Nanny and Tia Joann, she will be so missed and the memories we each have with her will be cherished for years.

Joann made her entrance into the world on February 2, 1937 to Luna Wayne Jackson and Ruby Lee Pierce Jackson. She was the first child and 9 years later she helped her parents welcome her brother Jerry Jackson. Her parents and brother, Jerry, all preceded her in death. In 1951, she met the love of her life, Kenneth Earl Johnson, and on July 23, 1954 at Bethel Baptist Church in Eastland, they promised their love to each other. They made their home in Flatwood TX and in 1955, the first of their 3 children were born, and their little family continued from there. Joann's pride and joy are, Kenneth Ray Johnson, Steven Earl Johnson (Kellye) and Barbara Diane Edwards (Trent). Her children all loved, cared for and cherished her until the very end. Joann's life was made complete with the births of her grandchildren. Jody, Jason (Cristy), Justin Johnson, Stephanie (Jon) Wedell, Ashley Foust (Chris), Cassidy Tucker, Kenzie West (Kye) and adopted grandson, Casey "Meroney". When she thought her world couldn't be anymore full, along came her great grands: Brylee, Paisleigh, Geneva, Abby, Emma, Blake, Paige, Rubylee, Boyce, Brayden and Brenden. She also has one great great-granddaughter, Rhonda Oaklynn.

In 2011, Kenneth received a devastating diagnosis of cancer and after watching him bravely fight his battle, she ultimately lost her husband and best friend. Joann was also preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Ruby Lee Jackson, brother, Jerry Jackson and daughter-in-law, Rhonda Johnson.

Joann worked at Safeway Grocery in the meat department before starting her career in the Eastland County Clerk's office where she was later elected to the position of Eastland County Clerk. She served the people of the Eastland County community for many years and she reached her retirement in 2000. In Joann's younger years, she enjoyed reading a good book, traveling with her friend Betty, cooking on Sundays for her family and attending her grandchildren's many sporting events. In 2023 she moved into The Woodlands due to her failing health. She loved the staff and appreciated the way she was taken care of there. At the beginning of this year, Joann was moved to the nursing home side of The Woodlands and was again treated with love, respect and kindness by the staff. We appreciate the love and care that she received from both departments there over the years and thank you all so much. Joann was only on Solaris Hospice for a few days, but they were so kind and compassionate, not only to Joann, but to the entire family........thank you. Dr. Robert Deluca and Sharla Carroll have known, treated and cared for Joann for many, many years and for that, we thank you both. Joann is also survived by her sister-in-law Linda Sadler, who spoiled her with circle a word books, fresh baked goodies, late evening phone visits and Joann's favorite......... Hershey bars with almonds.

Each member of the family has their own special and personal memories of Joann, something that will sometimes make us shed a tear and other times double over with laughter.

Pallbearers will include her grandsons: Jody Johnson, Jason Johnson, Justin Johnson, Cass Tucker, Blake Johnson, Brenden Foust, and Brayden Foust. Honorary pallbearers will be Jon Wedell, Chris Foust, Kye West, and Casey Meroney.

In lieu of flowers, we would request that you make a donation in Joann's name to her favorite charities: Flatwood Cemetery Association, c/o Shirley Dove, 501 S. Bassett, Eastland, TX 76448 or to the Carbon Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 607, Carbon, TX 76435.
