Barbara Ann Wood, 87, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side on June 28, 2025, at Iraan General Hospital. She was born on November 12, 1937, in Halls Summit, Louisiana, to John Calvin and Audis Myrtle Shoemake.
Barbara graduated from Jal High School in 1954. On August 11, 1955, she married the love of her life, Charles Don Wood, in Jal, New Mexico. They shared 58 devoted years of marriage. Together they lived in many places across Texas, ultimately settling in Iraan - a town Barbara lovingly called home, surrounded by family.
Before becoming a full-time homemaker, Barbara worked as a nurse, a role that perfectly matched her caring and nurturing spirit. After the birth of her children, she joyfully devoted herself to her family. Barbara had a wide range of enriching hobbies: she loved to learn, study scripture, draw, sing, and tackle crossword puzzles - always in pen. Her greatest artistic passion was painting, a gift she practiced and cherished throughout her life.
A woman of deep faith, Barbara was a member of Iraan Community Church and previously an active member of Mother Holmes Memorial Baptist Church, the Rio Grande River Ministry, the Southwest Texas Prison Ministry, and Family Outreach. Her commitment to ministry and service was a testament to her love for people and her devotion to the Lord.
Above all, Barbara loved her family fiercely. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her warmth, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Don Wood; her parents; and two siblings, Minnie Joyce Cox and Harold Shoemake.
She is survived by her brother, Tom Shoemake and wife Pat of Eastland; her son, Charles "Chip" Wood and wife Debra of Iraan; her daughter, Lia Brantley of Fort Stockton; and her five granddaughters, Jayme Stuteville, Lauren McNeil, Caiti Word, Dallas Reiner, and Gracie Griffin. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren - Hunter, Reagan, Laken, Eamon, Zander, Mikey, Keathley, and Trip - and one great-great-granddaughter, Hazley, as well as many beloved extended family members and friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Iraan General Hospital and to Barbara Lightfoot for her dedicated care over the past several years.
The family will hold a memorial service on Saturday, July 05, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Iraan Community Church in Iraan, Texas. Edwards Funeral Home Eastland is in charge of cremation arrangements.
