It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Judy Kay Thornton, who left this world on August 12, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Gorman, Texas, to Robert Lee and Addie (Fonville) Slaughter, Judy embraced life with warmth and compassion from a young age. She attended Cisco Junior College and later Hardin Simmons University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education and became a beloved sponsor for the ROTC program.
On August 29, 1964, Judy married the love of her life, Robert M. Thornton, in Cisco, TX. Together, they navigated the joys and challenges of life, building a family and creating beautiful memories. Judy was a devoted member of Lake Highland Presbyterian Church, where her faith shone brightly. She was an ambassador for Christ, always responding to others with love and kindness, and she never met a stranger.
Judy poured her heart into everything she did. As a manager for Longhorn Youth Soccer for many years, she found joy in encouraging young athletes. Her love of music was evident in her passion for singing, and her role as a supportive wife, mother, and grandmother defined her legacy. Judy often said her family was her greatest hobby, and she cherished time spent with her children, Jennifer Stoops and her husband Clifford, and Robert Matthew Thornton and his wife Lisa, as well as her four beloved grandchildren: Harrison "Harry" Stoops, Hannah Stoops, Addie Thornton, and Kynnedi Faust.
Judy's joyful spirit was complemented by her love for shopping and hosting extravagant Christmas parties that brought friends and family together. A member of a ladies Bible study group, she found strength and companionship in her faith community, and her love for reading was a testament to her curious and nurturing nature.
She will be missed deeply by her devoted husband Robert, her children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Addie Slaughter.
In honor of Judy's life, funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Edwards Funeral Home Eastland, TX with interment to follow at Howard Cemetery in Desdemona, TX. Prior to this service, the family will gather for visitation at Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland at 12:00 PM. A memorial service in Dallas celebrating Judy's remarkable life and the love she shared with all will take place at a later date.
