Rodney Don Spruill, 63, was born on March 17, 1963, at the Gorman Blackwell Hospital to Truett Sherrod Spruill and Patsy Morris Spruill. On April 14, 2026, Rodney was welcomed into the arms of Jesus, fully healed and made whole.
When Rodney was around five years old, his family noticed something unique-he could walk straight down the hallway at night, but during the day he bounced from wall to wall. A visit to the eye doctor soon followed, and Rodney proudly received his first pair of eyeglasses. It was one of many moments that revealed his resilience and joyful spirit.
Rodney was a sweet, loving, and deeply caring soul who never met a stranger. He gave BIG HUGS, the kind that wrapped you in warmth and made you feel seen and loved. His tender heart extended even to the animals on the family farm. He formed a special bond with one of the Jersey cows he tended, visiting her daily to offer hugs, kisses, and back scratches. Rodney loved openly, fully, and without hesitation-and he loved everyone.
Throughout his life, Rodney worked faithfully and joyfully. He washed dishes at the Carbon School for 13 years, worked on a cleaning service in Stephenville, and helped his parents and brothers with countless tasks on the family farm in Carbon, Texas.
At 14 years old, Rodney accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the First Baptist Church in Carbon. His faith became the foundation of his life. He loved reading the Bible and spent years copying it word for word into notebooks-filling them with scripture written in his own hand. Gospel music was always close by, and he often hummed a tune as he went about his day. One of his favorite songs was "I'll Fly Away," which he joyfully sang as a church special alongside Pastor Donny Ray.
Rodney is survived by his mother, Patsy Spruill; his father Truett and wife Lila Spruill; his brothers Rex Shannon and Vickilea Spruill, and Russell Dean Spruill. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Shandi Shanks (Michelle), Kelsie Jirasek, Laramy Spruill (Amanda), Zachary Spruill (Kate), Chisholm Spruill (Mercades), Blatiney Velez (Rolando), Sierra Perrin (Cody), Grandle Thompson (Morgan), Lea Kay Brown (Ethan), and Hope Spruill Smith. Great-nieces and great-nephews include Kendall Shanks; Serenity and Keston Jirasek; Carson, Brayden, Madison, and Chrissy Spruill; Coby, Jeffrey, Anna, Rylea Jo, and Tucker Spruill; Nevaeh, Briseis, Truett, and Wyatt Spruill; Gavin, Olivia, and Adalynn Velez; Octavia and Sophia Perrin; Reese and Griffin Thompson; Eli, Lilly, and Chloe Ryan Brown; and Samantha and Abigail Smith.
Rodney was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Ruby and Emory "Slim" Morris; paternal grandparents Pearl and James "Cotton" Spruill; and great-niece Penelope Rose Spruill.
Rodney Don was a special gift to all who knew him. His smile, his hugs, his faith, and his gentle spirit left a mark on every heart he touched. Though he will be greatly missed, we rejoice knowing he is now fully healed in the presence of his precious Lord and Savior.
The family would like to thank Avir at Woodlands for their excellent care during Rodney's stay. We would also like to thank Solaris Hospice for the deep attention given to his comfort and care. A special thanks to the Mehaffey's for their assistance with his medical travels. Your kindness and support will always be remembered.
Pallbearers are Laramy Spruill, Zachary Spruill, Chisholm Spruill, Grandle Thompson, Rolando Velez, Cody Perrin and Honorary Pallbearer, Ethan Brown.
