Weldon "Roy" Broussard Sr. of Eastland passed away Monday, May 19, 2025 at Hendrick Hospital North in Abilene, TX surrounded by his loving family and Pastor Dale Wilbanks.
Roy was born on April 24, 1946, to Wilsey Joseph and Zora LaRue (Ussery) Broussard.
He graduated from high school in Bronte, TX in 1964. He has remained close friends with his classmates for over 60 years.
In 1966 he graduated from Cisco Junior College where he enjoyed playing in the swing band. The next day he went to work for Southwestern Bell as a lineman.
With the war in Vietnam still active, he received his draft number as 3. Knowing he would be drafted, he joined the United States Army, and trained at Ft Benning, GA with a special forces' unit Airborne. He became a Jump Master with more than 55 jumps to his credit. After training, he served his country in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. While there, the Vietcong blew up the ammo dump. From then on, we talked about explosions every time we saw fireworks. After returning from Vietnam, he worked for Southern Bell and attended night school at the University of Texas Arlington and received a bachelor's in criminal justice. Although he remained in telephone work, he never lost his love for law enforcement. Even though he returned to the telephone company, he remained in the Nation Guard first in Texas, and then Alaska. He retired from the guard after 26 years of service as the acting Command Sergeant Major of the Alaska National Guard.
Roy took an early retirement from AT&T and worked in Alaska for Anchorage Telephone Utility. After ten years in Alaska. He was asked to return to Texas to work again for AT&T. After 8 years, he retired in Abilene, TX as an outside plant manager.
While living in Alaska, in his spare time, he enjoyed biking, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and participated in the snow sculpture competition at the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous.
While working in Bedford, TX, he participated with the Telephone Company Pioneers with a horseback riding program for disabled children and adults.
Volunteering was a trait he carried with him for the rest of his life. He served as President of the Carbon Community Center, President of the Carbon Cemetery Association, President of the Eastland Rifle and Pistol Club, President of Crime Stoppers, volunteer at the Majestic Theater, and Eastland's Uncle Sam.
His generosity did not go unnoticed. In 2018, he was honored with the James T Wright Community Service Award by the Eastland Chamber of Commerce.
Roy was a lifelong Methodist and enjoyed singing in the church and community choirs.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Wilsey Joseph, and LaRue Broussard, and his brother, Edward Joseph Broussard.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Roberta Broussard; sons Weldon Roy Broussard Jr. and wife Jacque, David Broussard and wife Alisa, daughter Dianna Broussard; 8 grandchildren Justin and Cody Broussard, Dillon Oberbeck, Brennen and Bethany Broussard, Amber Hassell, Lydia Click, and Benjamin Ison; sisters-in-law Thylis Chambless, Wanda Broussard, nephew Eric Broussard, nieces Trudy Wooldridge, April Escamilla; 13 great-grand-children, and many great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are, Roy Broussard, Jr., Eric Broussard, Brennen Broussard, Robert Click, Benjamin Ison and Josh Hassell.
Funeral Services for Roy will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the First Methodist Church in Eastland with Pastor Dale Wilbanks officiating. Interment will follow in the Murray Cemetery in Carbon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at 1:00PM at the church.
